Restaurant Review - Yoshi Rou - Kaohsiung (Taiwan)

What's next for Omakase?

Impression

We went to this place for an omakase dinner. We did not see many similar restaurants nearby (mostly commercial banks or beauty salons) and its Japanese-styled design has stood the place out. When we arrived at around 6:30pm, it has already almost hit full house.

We have been arranged to sit near the bar so that the interaction with the chef could take place easily. The staff here were friendly - they have recommended us few places for local food and gave us a handwritten note about those places' contact numbers and address. Such personal touch is not something we experienced very oftenly.

We started with Soft-boiled Egg in Soy Sauce (NTD 40). The egg-y flavor was still there even it has been dived into the soy sauce. No worries, it was not salty at all. The soft-boiled egg was able to run as we expected.

This Beef with Orange Vinegar (NTD 90) has surprised us by its slightly salty and sour sauce. The roughly 40% done beef was nothing close to chewy, instead, it was tender and juicy. It gave us an even more unique flavor when matching with the sliced onion under the meat.

The highlight of the Tomato Sushi with Crab Salad (NTD 45) was the interesting texture of the tomato. I would believe it if someone told me it was meat. Of course it tasted fresh but not tomato-like at all. Anyways, a nice one.

The next one is Basil Pork Chop (NTD 100). The meat is amazingly tender, probably the most tender pork chop I have ever tasted. We were told that the meat has been marinated by basil sauce and basil sauce only. And this is why the meat could be THAT tender. I could have few more plates of this one.

The Prawn Tempura (NTD 160) is as crispy as we have expected. I appreciated the fact that instead of the tempura soy sauce (that we usually would be given to pair with the tempura), some salted matcha powder and spicy powder were served. Another creative idea.

All the sushi served were decent and fresh. I would say the below two were the brightest.

Prawn Sushi (NTD 150) in 2 ways (physically). The first one was the common sushi; the second one was grilled prawn head with stuffed sushi rice. The freshness of the prawn has melted into the rice and it became a naturally flavored one. Charm!

Seared Salmon Sushi (NTD 160). The meat immediately melted into oil once it has been put in the mouth as it has been sealed for just the right amount of time. Those fat...I miss you.

Wrap up

The dinner omakase set served more meat than we expected (and fewer sushi), which was fine. But for those who fancy sushi more, you might need to speak up. With very reasonable price, this is your go-to place for an omakase night.
