Restaurant - Wuji Curry - Kaohsiung (Taiwan)

Some more creativity for meat lovers?

Impression

There are a number of restaurants in Taiwan serving Japanese cuisine and sometimes we just need some more, maybe, just tiny bit more creative ideas to attract (and retain) diners. After all, "Mine is fresh" does not equal to a wow factor.

We started with the Stuffed Shrimp Roe Croquette (NTD 105). It is even more crispy than we expected and I would say it was a bit oily. However, the refreshing homemade sauce definitely scored as it was made with egg whites, mayo, vegetables and fruit juice.

This Smelly Devil of the Cow Don (NTD 259) was the first hit. We felt interesting enough just by knowing the name of this dish. Reasons? Because it included many strong-flavor ingredients, for example, sliced fried garlic, raw garlic, green onion and black garlic oil. The taste for sure was strong but very delicious. On the menu, it has even warned us that we would get bad breath after having this dish. Oh, the egg on top could even run.

This Volcano Eruption (NTD 535) meant to feed 2 persons as there's 500 grams of rice. Still, when it was served at our table, its size has wowed us. The portions are generous (obviously), and the crispy tempura with the curry was another highlight to our meal. There were tempura prawns, tempura chicken, tempura pork, lots of cheese and the not-so-spicy red curry. Very heavy and meaty, still, we like it so much.

We ended our meal with Soft-Boiled Egg Ice Cream. It had a unique twist - a savory ice cream considering there's little soy sauce on top of the soft-boiled egg. It certainly gave this dish its uniqueness and yes, it did not taste that strange we expected. The soft-boiled egg was not that soft however, I would say it was overcook.

Wrap up

I felt so much "fun" not only when reading the hilarious name of the dishes but also trying their creative dishes. This was the experience I do not get very often. The whole meal did not let us down even with some seemingly uncommon ingredients combinations. I for sure will come back.
