Restaurant Review - Da Yu House - Restaurant Review
Local restaurant serving economical Japanese dishes
Impression
The place is located in a local mall at a no-tourist district. I am dare to say 99% of the diners are locals haha. Well, shall we call this "hidden local gem"? During lunch hour, there will always be a long queue outside the restaurant - do expect to wait for around 25 minutes to be seated. The staff will help the diners to order before you get seated to save time.
Grilled Eel Don (HKD 78) was a surprise because of its generous amount of eel meat. The eel sauce was not overly salty and the sprinkled sliced egg cake and white sesame were. All lunch set came with a bowl of miso soup, salad, steamed egg, starter and a scone of ice-cream, very good value. Do note that there were still some little soft bones left in the eel meat, I do not mind (but I know some people do) and was enjoying it a lot.
Mixed Tempura Don (HKD 58) featured a sliced of sweet potato, pumpkin, eggplant and 2 different kind of fishes. The tempura were all fresh and crispy without too much bread crumbs or frying powder on the outside. It gave you the feeling of tempura could be light and not oily as well.
This Black Stork, Hokkaido Octopus and Crab Cake Oden (HKD 32) was nothing less than we expected. The soup itself was slight too salty but still within our acceptable range. I enjoyed the black stork the most, the texture was very much like jelly, just a version of savory and a bit harder.
Wrap up
Considering the price setting, I do not think there's much I should complain. The level of service provided was unexpectedly high with smiling staff filling your water efficiently. It is not something you come across often in a tiny local Japanese restaurant. It might not be a fancy place for some fancy meals, but for sure it lived up to our expectations in every aspects.
