Restaurant Review - Tokichi - Hong Kong
Impression
Probably my third or fourth time being here, but this was the first time I decided to try their savory dishes - matcha noodles. The reason I have never order is that I came every time with a full belly and simply was looking for some desserts. But whenever I opened their menu, I am attracted by their very matcha-focused dishes, so regardless of my dinner, I came here determining to intake some more calories.
The Maruto Matcha Rice Flour Dumpling Set (HKD 68) was the limited edition for Hong Kong. It basically included 8 little cubes of chewy dumplings, kinako, matcha powder, matcha syrup, ice-cream, and a tea bag. I like the variety of it and one can enjoy many kinds of matcha products in this set. I love matcha but the matcha syrup was a bit too sweet for me, though it would be a good sauce when mixed with the matcha powder to balance its sweetness.
Needless to say, the Matcha Parfait (HKD 98) is almost a must-order every time people visit the place. This time was not an exception for me. As expected, the quality was excellent and the many-layers were mouth-watering. The existence of that one particular berry was such a delight and a surprise (if you are having it for the first time).
So here's my guy- Kisune Matcha buckwheat noodle set [Hot] (HKD 118). My first impression was, wow theres's so much carb. Yes, you have a bowl of noodles and a bowl of rice with sprinkled powder. To be honest, nothing has wow-ed us with the stable quality but I think that's good enough right? The matcha buckwheat noodles did not have strong flavour but it tasted healthy. The portion size of the kisune was quite generous by the way. I particularly enjoyed the mini dessert bowl with a dumpling, matcha jelly and red bean paste.
Wrap up
If you ask people where is the place for some matcha desserts, I will not be surprised if most of the response was Tokichi. After all, it was a classic for many people. For me, it for sure is and I have no doubt in their quality and dedication towards the food. However, with the price setting and the competitions from elsewhere, I believe some more improvements on service level or promotions are desired to stay in the circle.
