Restaurant Review - Ootoya - Hong Kong

Quality classic Japanese dishes with affordable price.

Impression

The origin of this restaurant is Japan (quite obvious when you look at its name) and I heard that for the same dish, the price is doubled in Hong Kong. Well, can you see my jealousy face? lol First time being here thanks to my friend's recommendations. All we have ordered were set and set. We arrived at around 6pm on Saturday and it was fairly crowded already. When we left at around 8pm, gosh, the line was longer than my hair.




Our night started with the Mixed Skewers (HKD 140). Unfortunately this was a bit below our expectations. Some part of it was over-grill and the main problem was they were way too salty, except the chicken ones. Holding back some extra salts will make every thing taste better.



Believe it or not, this Beef Sukiyaki Hot Pot Set (HKD 180) was my favorite. The beef was sublime particularly when you matched the meat with the raw egg and other ingredients (for example, the onions and mushrooms) in the pot, they tasted like heaven. If I ever visit the place again, this would be my must-go for sure.



The Grilled Atka Mackerel Set (HKD 116) was nothing less than what we expected. The skin of the grilled fish was quite crispy and the meat was tender and juicy. It did a good job of intensifying the fishy flavour while managed to keep its freshness.



To be honest, I do not order Grilled Ox Tongue very often because it is usually quite predictable, but I enjoyed this version, which had the sweet sauce on the side.

Wrap up

I enjoyed the comfy environment in this place but the thing I would complain was the limited dining time which was 90 minutes. I totally understand the arrangement but just when you are having a good time with friends and kept being chased to order...Well, do I look like a selfish consumer? Umm...Anyways, do give it a try if you would like to have some classic Japanese dish, and I would highly recommend ordering the set.
