Restaurant Review - Chayamachi - Hong Kong
Surprisingly good value Japanese dinner set!
Impression
Sham Shui Po is not a place I visited frequently for dinner in the past; however, if you follow closely every year about the Michelin-starred restaurants, you may find a number of independent eatery on the list are located in this district. We might as well call this place local hidden gem and lately I am gradually more interested in exploring other "gems" in this area.
The Mackerel Bento (HKD 78) was delicious with generous amount of cabbage salad, rice and a little starter box. The markerel itself was well marinated and savory with the right amount of fish sauce. And I also like the shred egg cake on the top. The seaweed salad in the bento was also fairly fresh and crunchy, something I do not see very often.
The Miso Soup came with the bento box. It was a bit salty as expected and as most of the miso soup I have tasted. The ingredients used here, though, were not commonly seen. There were few cubed white carrots, fried tofu and seaweed. It did not look like some pre-made packaging soup base and I enjoyed them quite a lot.
This Homemade Eel Snack (HKD 19) was not on the menu, instead, it was written on a white paper which has been casually (I think) stick on the wall in the restaurant. As a fish lover, I ordered this pop-up dish without any hesitation. I did not expect much with this price, but turned out it was a big decent surprise - both the portion and the quality of it. Two huge slices of eel with nice texture! And the presentation was way over HKD 19 too. I must say this was one of the most good value grilled eel I have ever seen/tasted. Well, such a hidden gem.
My dinner ended with this Matcha Pudding (additional HKD 15). It was soft and tender, with a rich taste of dairy and matcha.
Wrap up
