Restaurant Review - Tasty Veggie - Hong Kong
A even healthier spot for vegetarians/vegans.
Impression
My friend and I visited this place on a weekdays night. We were surprised by the fact that it was almost full house even it was just 7pm. After reading some of the interview newspaper that stick on the wall near the elevator, we understand more about the uniqueness of this place. In addition to the use of natural ingredients, low sugar, salt and oil, this restaurant also emphasized on not using any kind of vegan version of MSG, which many vegetarian/vegan restaurants do. So you can imagine the dishes taste like those you make for yourself, nothing but natural ingredients are used/added.
Together with the lunch sets, a drink, a bowl of housemade soup and starters have been served before the main dish. These are Quinoa Pumpkin Soup and Mushroom Soup. Both are blended by themselves using raw and fresh ingredients. The pumpkin soup was thick in texture that you might think some corn starch has been added but actually there was not even much water added to keep the natural texture and sweetness of the pumpkin; the latter was another delight. Every spoonful you could feel tons of mixed mushrooms which kept you keep chewing and chewing. Very generous amount of ingredients!
The presentation and overall texture of the Tibetan Safflower Asparagus Risotto (HKD 168 for the dinner set) was very nice. The texture was exactly as it should be and the use of Safflower certainly gave this dish its uniqueness, though there was not much flavor of it, only the natural coloring (light yellow).
This is Homemade Green Curry Hericium & Vegetables with Paratha (HKD 168 for the dinner set). The curry sauce (yes, it was homemade too) was bright and eye-catching. It was kind of watery but it still lived up to your expectations if you fancy something spicy. Meanwhile, the strong flavor allows the natural earthiness of the fruits (peach and mango) to shine too.
I would say this Housemade Tiramisu was my favourite (seriously addictive) for the night. Except the lady fingers, every thing was made from scratch for this low-sugar dessert. Creamy and buttery with the right amount of coffee powder - enough to make it tiramisu-like but not too strong at the same time.
Wrap up
We were amazed by how many dishes have been made from scratch. Even the slightest thing - the soup for example, they insisted to blend it by themselves but not using ready-to-eat package. There are many vegetarian restaurants out there emphasizing the use of natural ingredients but still, the food were not that natural and the "vegetarian/vegan" mindset was not really there. Meatless is different from healthiness.
