Restaurant Review - Baikohken (Updated) - Hong Kong

Michelin-starred Ramen!

(Updated on 21-1-2019)

For the second-time visit, we have ordered the Shoyu Ramen (HKD 75). Compared with the Shio Ramen, this one has a much richer flavour with its thick soup base. Well, we must say we prefer this one than the last time's one. Again, the sliced pork was relatively dry and are still missing a soft-boiled egg. Anyways, a place for your to grab some quick ramen.

We have also ordered the Carrot Cake (HKD 10) as an extra treat. As the Chinese New Year is approaching soon, the place has housemade few traditional Chinese New Year using quality Japanese ingredients for the diners as gifts or self-use. This one tasted so good - without adding too much flour which affects the texture, and the toppings used were not overly fatty. Probably partly thanks to the skillful frying skills, they did not taste oily at all. Quite a nice one.

Impression

It gives us a impression that each year there are quite a number of ramen places got a seat on the Michelin list. It takes lots of passion and skills in making a ramen with consistency in quality as well as the flavour. To stand out from the crowd, restaurants usually need to spend extra time in creating exceptionally quality toppings, soup base as well as the noodles itself to maintain the stream of diners , which is obviously not an easy task.

We have ordered this Shio Ramen (HKD 58 for Half Size; HKD 75 for Regular Size) for lunch. As you can see in the picture below, the soup base is quite oily with the use of rich ingredients. One thing we really like is it was not salty at all - could even say it was quite light and thin - instead of the rich and thick texture we usually had. However, the portion of the sliced pork was slightly fewer than we expected and there was not any complimentary soft-boiled egg. By the way, there are around 7 more choices on the menu for ramen (some are seasonal), so you could probably pick the one you enjoy.

Meet and Exceed?

Overall, we would describe the ramen we ordered as "average". Nothing really surprised us (but the soup base is as rich as we expected) and everything was relatively simple without emphasis either on the meats or the toppings. The price settings was average as well compared with other places selling good ramen. We could not see any particular reasons for coming back again, but certainly you need to check the list if you are a ramen fan.
