Restaurant Review - G Gallery - Hong Kong

A romantic Western dinner night

Impression

No doubt, there are lots of hidden gems (quality restaurants) operating in industrial buildings, and we are always keen to try them. The cost of opening one in these areas is lower (the lower rent) and because of this, the investment put in the ingredients could be more and leads to a higher quality of food items. This is the logic. But it isn't the case for every places opening in industrial buildings unfortunately. This time, we came to this Western place during dinner and look for surprising dishes.

The Special Dinner Set (HKD 268) we ordered included an Appetizer, Main, Soup of the Day and Coffee or Tea.

The Soup was Cauliflower Cream Soup which was average. Nothing surprised us, with up to standard level of creaminess in terms of the texture, without being too heavy. Some obvious flavour of cauliflower too.

The Appetizer we chose was Japan Style Abalone with Crab Roe Salad and Coconut Mango Jelly. The Abalone has been well seasoned and quite chewy. Not a huge one but has definitely lived up to our expectations. We enjoyed how they put a sweet dessert jelly in this Appetizer so the whole plate tasted more interesting. The presentation was good too.

The Main was Ink Pasta in Seafood in Cilicen Tomato Sauce. It has wowed us when being served because the amount of seafood they have put inside the plate was much more than we expected! We could not even see the Ink Pasta as the seafood has entirely covered them. Out of all these toppings, mussels were fresh which have being cooked to perfection, but others were just average.

This Rigatoni baked with Bufallo Mozzarella, Wild Mushrooms, Pesto Tomato Sauce (HKD 118) was a bit disappointing. The tomato sauce is okay, but the ingredients - the flavour of the wild mushrooms were being hid in terms of its earthiness. We can only taste the sweetness of the tomato but not the mushrooms. Such a pity! Also, both this one and the above ink pasta have failed to create the al dente texture of the pasta. Slightly overcooked we would say.

Meet and Exceed?

The price of the food items here are not particularly economical, so in my thoughts, the bar for their dishes has been set especially high. Turned out they are slightly better than average, but not to the point that you would think it's worth it. Great to have a try, but it takes more reasons for us to go back for the next time.
