Restaurant Review - Liao Za Lie (Updated) - Hong Kong

Absolutely a new decent experience!

(Updated on 13-12-2018)

The Homemade Stretch Noodles with Chives and Pork Dumplings (HKD 68) was so yum and full of flavor. Very savory with a lot of tempting flavors coming from different kinds of Chinese herbs, seaweed and fried garlic. Just could not help having spoonful after spoonful. Quite a good deal given that there are lots of toppings and the portion was big. The highlight was the housemade noodles of course!

The Braised Pork (HKD 78) was super well done. So tender and fatty, paired with a unique sweet sauce. A bit different from what we used to eat, this kind of sauce is more liquid-like with higher level of sweetness. A delicious one!

This County Hu Handmade Noodles in Soup with Spare Ribs (HKD 68) was absolutely my favourite for the night. What is special about this bowl of noodles is that the soup base is relatively sour from what we used to have - but turned out it tasted so good together with all other ingredients. The noodles are not those al dente kinds but still bouncy and flavourful. No words can describe how tasty the spare ribs was - very very tender with some fats on it and being well seasoned!

The Deep Fried Marinated Chicken Wings (HKD 32 for 3) have been seasoned with fermented bean curd, giving it a very unique taste. It was being deep fried with a crispy outside and quite juicy inside. The good thing was that they are not oily at all although they were being cooked with this method. Most tasty when eat them freshly!

Impression

Well, the bottle of water that has been put on the table is a joy to even look at. Inside the bottle there are a few pieces of mint leaves and a slice of lemon. A good and refreshing treat to neutralize the flavor of heavily seasoned (but delicious) dishes here. No wonder its name as "Liao Za Lie" which means extremely beautiful in Chinese.

The Cold Served Baby Cucumber (HKD 68) is another very impressive dish. The sauce contains a myriad of flavors, making each bite extremely enjoyable. The melon sprout is crispy, juicy and refreshing, and is a perfect match with the heavily flavored sauce. One of the most unforgettable dish we've had here tonight.

The Tongguan Style Chinese Burger w/ Stewed Pork (HKD 68) is seasoned with various herbs and seasonings, giving it a very rich flavor. The pork is pulled, making each bite of the bun extremely juicy. The pork has just the right amount of fat to make the whole bun fatty and delicious.

This Roasted Lamb Ribs (HKD148; Small) is served fresh out of the oven. The ribs are roasted in such a way that the thinner part of the rib gets very smokeyh and crispy, while the thicker part of it contains meat that is juicy and fatty. You can always add a pinch of lemon juice and pepper seasoning to make the whole dish even more savory. e shop owner even provided us with plastic gloves to avoid getting our hand oily.

The Homemade Stretch Noodles w/ Spare Ribs (HKD 68) is not for the faint hearted. The noodle is heavily seasoned with chilli, garlic, parsley and a miriad of other seasonings. There is so much flavor in every bite of the noodle. The rib served with the noodle is also fresh out of the oven, as one can still see the juicy rib glittering and bubbling with heat when it is served.

There are various goat innards contained in this Lamb Entrails Soup (HKD 88). The soup is cooked to a thick consistency and is very savory. To my surprise the soup is very well cooked and the taste is not as "goaty" as I thought it would be. I'm sure people who love eating innards will love this dish.

Meet and Exceed?

We have to say this type of dishes are not those we come across very often, and not even the dishes we would order usually; however, outside our so-called "comfort zone", it gave us many surprises (good ones) to have tasted such unique dishes that you could hardly find in other places. A lot of food look spicy, but they are not as much as we expected - they smell so nice on the other way. If you would like to try some new food, here's your place!
