Restaurant Review - Renren Heping Restaurant - Hong Kong

The place for Barbecued Goose!

Impression

It might be unfair to say the Siu Mei (barbecued meat) is the best-selling food for both locals to tourists in Hong Kong (because the dim sum and the wonton noodles are also super hot!), but I guess no one would disagree if I said this type of dishes is one of the most classic food in Hong Kong. This place is famous with its Siu Mei, especially the Goose which belongs to their highlight. When we went through the menu, we found there's some fusion dishes too.

This Baked US Oysters with Italian Red Wine (HKD 98) served as an excellent dish to pair with your rice or noodles. The oysters themselves were fresh and have been deep-fried before being baked with the red wine sauce. The sauce was not too thick and managed to be quite sweet with a light flavour of red wine. A lot of chopped onions have been put at the bottom which have totally absorbed the sweetness and the freshness of the oysters. That's why this one would be a great match with your carb so no sauce would be wasted!

The Nostalgic Baked Goose Liver (HKD 98) was an interesting one. The little goose liver, which were all small in size, were all at the bottom covered with this egg cake. The taste of those goose livers were quite different from what we used to have - probably because of difference in the cooking method. These were the fried dough stick (another famous local food) on the top and obviously it was not crispy as it should be because they have already been melted into the egg cake. Overall, it was a tasty dish but do not expect a huge portion of goose liver.

This Lychee Wood Charcoal-Barbecued Goose in Xinhui Gujing Style (HKD 170 for the lower qtd) was the charm. This single dish already worth the whole trip. We were not a pro in barbecued dishes so we may not able to distinguish the style is in Xinhui Guijing or not, but one thing we were sure is that the texture of it was so tender and soft, and its skin was superb. The flavour of the crispy skin may probably come from the lychee wood which certainly gave the uniqueness of the meat and not commonly seen in other places. Goose, you deserve to be the signature dish!

Meet and Exceed?

Oh, almost forget. There's complimentary Chinese desserts (not pictured) after we got our bills too. This time was Red Bean Soup and it was a nice thing for the restaurant to do. Basically we were satisfied with all the dishes we have ordered. And needless to say, the barbecued goose was the best and probably one of the best we have ever tried. We could not describe enough how tender and juicy it was but it was well beyond average and we totally agree that this dish should be the highlight of this place. Want to try the best one in town? This is the place!
