Restaurant Review - Akayama - Hong Kong

Looking for some economical Japanese meals?

Impression

This place is located in a very low-key mall. To be honest, one can hardly spot the mall since over 90% of the stores there are either tutorial school or skin care boutique. We did not explore in details but possibly this restaurant is the only eatery in the mall. Without many competition, I guess, the management team has still put considerable amount on the interior design to make it more Japanese-like, which is something we do appreciate.

The Grilled Eel with Udon set (HKD 68) was a surprise considering its price level. The eel was well done with slightly too much sauce - but if you prefer dipping them into the udon with the soup, then it would be fine. The udon itself was average with some black fungus and green onion. The amount of the seasoning was withing our expectation.

This Coke Pork Rice Set (HKD 65) was an interesting one as we thought it was grilled pork and turned out it was grilled pork cartilage haha. The use of "coke" means they have used coke as part of the ingredients, I guess. As a big fan of cartilage, of course this surprise was more than welcome. The sauce that spread on top was decent and I like how they have added some salad vegetables on the side with sesame sauce.

It might not look like so, but this Grilled Beef Rice Set (HKD 55) was a charm. The texture of the beef was tender and you can see there were some red parts (not very obvious though) in the middle which made them not chewy at all. I would not say they were of superior quality but for sure lived up to our expectation, again, considering its price level. By the way, all these sets come with a complimentary drink too.

Meet and Exceed?

There are many formats in presenting Japanese dishes and I believe being economical does not necessarily mean of inferior quality or the taste needs to be compromised. Take the dishes served in this place as an example, the presentation and the environment might not be excellent, but when you taste the dishes, you can sense they were all being prepared with heart and effort as well, which is something we (you too, right?) always look for when we eat out. To conclude, do drop by if you pass by!
